8:19PM - tree photos for Adahy

[info]adahy, on her Wishlist asked for -

#3. Any kind of art/photos/postcards/clippings of trees. Digital or though the mail.

I went through the various digital folders of all our photos and came up with this lot - http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v482/bar_bar_ella/trees/

28 pictures, all up. All but one taken here in Australia (the other is from my Canadian trip in 2000), mostly here in the state of Victoria. Several are from our Nullarbor crossing in 2002 - well, as the name would suggest, the Null Arbor Plain is a place of no trees, so there aren't any from the actual Nulla itself. :) But there's several from Western Australia and at least one from South Australia. All different sorts of trees, native trees, non-natives, individuals, groups, dead, alive, good photos, strange photos, at least one that's seriously out of focus but its extreme closeup of the colours to be found on a gum tree trunk is rather lovely despite that, I think.

Hope you like something in there, [info]adahy!

3:44AM - brill old movie, on telly, Melbin, this weekend!

Melbourne people! (also, it belatedly occurs to me, as this will be on the ABC, mayhap other states will have it, too - check yer guides!) Late this Sunday night - or very early this Monday morning, if you prefer - Channel 2 is repeating a wonderful, wonderful movie from 1933 called The Ghoul.

This movie was thought to be completely lost for decades and decades and oh how happy it makes me to say that we can still see it in all its glory!

The imdb.com page for The Ghoul has a very excellent review and tells a bit more about its loss and re-discovery. Well worth a read.

The Ghoul stars Boris Karlof and a fantastic support cast including Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Sir Ralph Richardson. And it's funny. I don't mean the type of funny that old horror movies can so often be, where you're laughing because it's all so hokey and cringeful and all that. I mean this script is sophisticated and genuinely amusing and the actors all pick it up and run with it. :)

One of the writers who worked on the adaptation of the screenplay was Roland Pertwee. Yes - PERTWEE. Father of Jon and Michael, uncle of Bill, grandfather of Sean. Talented bloody family, those Pertwees.

So, yeah - if you're up late on Sunday night, or you've got a spare video to chuck in the VCR before you toddle off to bed, catch up with The Ghoul. A wonderful Thirties movie.

1:03PM - fave books

*cough* This started as a comment on [info]f13tch3r's journal. I got a little carried away. A bit. Maybe. :) I had to re-edit the comment about four times before LJ would let me actually post it there 'cos it was too long! :D Anyway, I thought it might be useful to post it here, just for whatever future reference.

This was all pretty much straight off the top of my head, btw. Given more thought, I might list some slightly different things. The first three books listed, though, are definitely, definitely my favourites of all time...

Happy Birthday, [info]septembergirl80!!!! :) *huggles*

I thought of it this morning, actually, but I wanted to hold off until I was quite certain it was your birthday where you are and then post while it was still your birthday where I am. :) I think it's worked... Heh.

Have a great one, m'lovely. Hoping your wishes come true. ;D

12:01AM - mayhap a bit of a long-shot...

About a year or 18 months ago (roughly - it might even have been a little longer ago, I'm really a bit fuzzy on it all), there was a song by a dude...

The video consisted of him as a bicycle courier, weaving and bopping through the streets and eventually delivering a package to some groovy warehouse place. He had dark hair, long, maybe a goatee, but I might just be imagining that bit.

The song was a good disco song. No, really. AND! It incorporated some Beethoven! Either Beethoven's 5th or 9th, I think - may've been something else, but it was definitely Beethoven, from memory.

After this song, he had another one, video of which he was wearing a white suit (from hazy memory) and performing in a studio with a band. (this was also quite good, but not as good as the previous)

Does anybody happen to recall who this dude was or what the Beethoven Bicycle Courier song was? Sorry it's not really all that much to go on...

2:43PM - darling Vlad-puss

It's a year already.

I still look for him at the window when I walk home. I still remember the smell of his fur when I buried my face in it. I still dream about him. I miss him so much. :(

He's got his headstone now, though! Dad finished it about a month ago. Will post a pic when I get up there to see it.

7:19PM - Vale, Mr Irwin

[info]kits_the_dm has beautifully summed up a good deal of just why Steve Irwin's premature death is sad to us. Some of my own thoughts, too, are in the comments there.

7:25PM - WWGD?

Why, be a top bloke[tm], of course! :) Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl comes good on his promise of a beer for trapped miners.

When I mentioned this to [info]kits_the_dm this morning, he said "Er, he DOES realise that they're Tassie miners, right? Do you think he knows how much those guys can drink?" :D

Eh, the Grohlster's cashed up. I'm sure he'll cope. :)

3:55PM - words

Was just reading this article from Developmental Biology Online because a discussion on [info]little_details today mentioned "polar twins" and I couldn't recall what they were so, y'know, Google's my friend.

Polar twins are also known by possibly the stupidest, most oxymoronic term I've come across in a good year or so - "half-identical". *shakes head*

It's an interesting article, but a couple of phrasings really jarred with me and had me telling the laptop, as I'm wont to do when alone, that "They shoulda had a better editor on this paper". And then a funny thing hit me - I actually miss something I used to do at work!

I actually miss proof-reading the science articles and transcribing the researchers' and doctors' letters and reports (well, for some of them, at least - our Head of Oncology, f'instance was always a delight to transcribe for, our Head of Rheumatology, otoh, although a wonderful man and good friend, mumbled so much on tape that we secretaries would practically draw straws for who got to do them). I even miss the "play" of editing a slab of writing down to a proscribed word limit, most commonly done for grant applications ("Explain your research in layman's terms [1000 characters max.]" heh) or conference proposals ("Explain your presentation in geek terms [500 characters max.]" double heh).[1]

When the new "research precinct" was built at our campus and our department basically split down the middle, all the wet labs were moved to the new building, all admin stayed put. The distance between the two places meant that the labbies simply stopped bringing work over for us. The work in that job got a whole lot less enjoyable right about then.

'Twas one of many factors...

[1] Yes, I exaggerate, but not wildly. :)

Heeeeeeeeeeeee! The Bonzos in beautiful, living colour in 1968!

Viv picking his nose on television. Ya gotta love it. :D

I always thought I'd done a post of some favourite Bonzo quotes, back in '03 or so, but apparently not. Hrm.
